If you’re looking for a guide to get you thinking about what’s next for you for 2024, I’m sending you a handy sheet I shared with my clients. I call it “building your internal compass.” Get the guide now!!
Before you go into plans and strategies and spreadsheets and to dos and giving yourself a whole new list of action items, spend a little time letting your mind wander (and wonder) because “Afterall, dreaming is a form of planning,” Gloria Steinem.
The point of this is to call in what you want to receive and to unlock your creativity. It’s a chance to go beyond the societal demands of be smaller (female), get bigger (male), make more money, be more productive, be a better parent/spouse/employee, etc.
The prompts on this sheet aren’t goals for the sake of the goals listed above, rather this is meant as encouragement to usher in new ways of being.
An example might be, I used to be petrified to talk in front of people and very shy to mention my business, but now I’m a trainer and a coach and I share all the time about how to work with me.
I used to have mom guilt. Now I don’t. I used to beat myself up all the time. Now I celebrate my wins (and hopefully encourage other people to do it regularly too).
Essentially those are all just changing habits and beliefs, so yes this is reminiscent of the traditional “New Year’s Resolution” except with more depth and joy and not as much pressure about failing or fitting in.
Go Farther Into the Future
You’ll notice on the bottom it says: Put a note in your calendar on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Spring Equinox, to re-read and re-commit.
I was journaling the other morning and I wrote:
The energy and motivation for getting through the finish line is different than when starting a thing.
It was really evident later that day when I was doing chin ups. I went from beast mode to using every ounce of strength to get up there by those last reps. Check out this video where you can see me “re-committing” IRL…
As you think about 2024 and coming up with resolutions and goals and wanting to develop new habits, build in a plan for what you’re going to do past the starting point.
Whether that is partially there or midway or maybe when you’re almost done, put a date in the calendar to go back to whatever it is that you’re thinking about right now. Sometimes it isn’t that we’ve quit, it’s just that we forgot or other things became more important.
Putting it in your calendar will remind you to re-commit. In some ways this will feel like you’re starting over, but really you have all this experience behind you (that you’re probably discounting).
Re-committing is underrated as a tool for success.
If you ask me, re-committing can be harder than starting things, but I’m perpetually thinking of new ideas, so beginnings are easier for me… the excitement of something new, the challenge of solving an unknown problem, the thrill of getting in deep; I love all of that.
But then there’s the everyday part of it of whatever it is you want to accomplish. The parts that are sloggy and mundane, maybe tedious. Maybe life gets in the way, too.
It’s ok to re-commit. I think it’s a cycle of life. It doesn’t have to be a big deal. Just do it (as the cliche goes).
And go into things, knowing that re-committing will be part of it. Tell me a time when it hasn’t been necessary, but we still seem to beat ourselves up for this even though it’s a natural part of a growth/change process.
So, what is next for you. I would love to know if you use this worksheet or if you do anything other kind of new year’s activity.
If you’re thinking about your health and wellness, there are three ways to work with me right now:
