Could you stand on one foot and put your sock on the other foot? Could you kneel down to pick something up and get up without assistance? Do you feel like you have a weak core? Could you hold a deep squat? Is your body tight and stiff?
Mobility isn’t something that’s only important for people who workout. It’s relevant to everyone. From getting in and out of our cars, up and off the couch or bending over to load the dishwasher, we’re asking our bodies to move all the time in all different ways.
There’s no reason to feel tight, weak and unstable doing everyday tasks. And you definitely don’t want to go into a workout feeling that way!
One of my favorite things about mobility in the body is that it can improve with a little practice, especially when done safely and progressively. I have seen my clients increase movement in their shoulders, open up their hips (which is great for golfers!!!), and squat without knee pain (yes it is possible).
Most of the time, we’re trying to fit mobility into the beginning of a workout and then stretch at the end – side note, don’t hold a stretch without warming up first; static stretching is for after exercise, and dynamic stretching and mobility is for BEFORE.
Starting next week on Sunday, January 14, one of my fellow trainers Katie Harris and I are doing a class focused entirely on core strength and mobility. This is a 10 week program that we’re going to teach progressively, so if you miss one it won’t mean that you won’t know what’s going on! We’re also going to have a Facebook group for community support and so you can access us with questions. By the way, if you do mobility practices and you have a strong core, you’re going to automatically improve your stability and balance.
