I remember the first assisted pull up I did in a gym — it was the summer of 2019. I had no idea what I was doing. I bet if I asked you, “what’s the secret to get from 1 pull up to 10?” you’d say discipline. Or focus. Or hard work.
Yeah, those are relevant.
But do you know what the real reason is? What nobody ever talks about? ADAPTATION.
Our bodies are always adapting.
Think about your body similar to how the sun moves through the day or a year – you don’t even feel it, do you? We see it as it goes from sunrise to sunset, but it’s always rotating and moving. And that’s essentially what is happening all the time to our bodies, too.
We are constantly adapting; in tiny-not-even-able-to-tell-on-an-everyday-basis ways.
Can you stop treating your body like it can change in 3 days or 3 weeks or even 3 months. Stop expecting instant gratification and then beating yourself up when something “isn’t working.”
I guess you could say the process is “slow.” But let’s redefine slow and follow nature’s guide… the way the season’s change over the course of months, how long it takes to grow a field of crops, or for a child to go from embryo to infant.
None of those beautiful things are instantaneous. They’re just right in how long they take. And so are you.
Respect adapting.
I’ve had pull ups in my workouts pretty much every week since that first one. My goal is to get to 20 unbroken reps – by the end of the year. I have some more adapting to do, especially as it comes to the energy needed for this. And being able to hold on that long.
Your strength and your health isn’t about one night’s sleep, one indulgent meal, one missed workout. It’s also not about going hard in bursts.
Pay attention to the inputs, the stimulus, the cumulative efforts over months and years. Because that’s what your body will adapt to… little by little, day by day, rep by rep.
If you want to be stronger and more balanced, mentally and physically, message me to find out more about my in-person training at Freedom Fitness Wentzville, my virtual program called SET or my 1:1 coaching program.
May you realize that you are always adapting. May you let go of instant results being a thing. May you follow nature as a guide.
